Rakesh Roshan is among the top five directors in mainstream Hindi cinema. Since 2000 his films have had a phenomenal run at the box office with son Hrithik Roshan in the lead. He launched Hritik with a blockbuster Kaho Naa .. Pyaar Hai.. .then when junior Roshan’s career was on the precipice, he resurrected it with a science fiction Koi Mil Gaya. The move under duress was gusty for a mainstream filmmaker who would have normally chosen to walk the beaten track. Roshan then went a step further by projecting Hritik in a supreme mould. with both his experiments working wonders, he is on a high. for all achievements as a director, Roshan never wanted to be one. His dream was to be hero, which didn’t materialize. Seeing the writing on the wall, Roshan decided to move behind the camera as a director.
His first film Aap Ke Deewane was a hit and he established himself as a front-rank director with more hits like Khudgarz (which received Shatrughan Sinha ‘s acting career in 1987), Karan Arjun and Khoon Bhari Maang (which won Rekha the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress in 1988). Today he’s among the very few innovative directors working within the so-called commercial format.
