Shashi Kapoor the Indian film actor was born Balbir Prithviraj Kapoor on 18 March 1938 in Calcutta. Shashi is the younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, the son of Prithviraj Kapoor, and has three children Karan Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor and Kunal Kapoor.
The actor is remembered for many hit Hindi movies, including ones he starred in with, Amitabh Bachchan such as Namak Halaal, Deewar and Do Aur Do Paanch. Shashi Kapoor has also played leading roles in a number of Hollywood movies, including several Merchant Ivory productions like Shakespeare-Wallah. Shashi basically started acting in flicks as a child artist in the early 1940s appearing in many mythological movies. His best known performances were in Aag and Awaara where he portrayed the younger version of the roles played by his older brother Raj Kapoor. The superstar of his time made his debut as a leading hero in the 1961 Yash Chopra movie titled ‘Dharmputra’ His most famous movies include Jab Jab Phool Khile, Waqt, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Kanyadan, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Kabhie Kabhie, Satyam shivam Sundaram, Trishul, Kranti, Kaala Patthar, Suhaag, etc.
In 1980 he set up his production house, Film Valas, which produced critically acclaimed films like Kalyug, Junoon, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Utsav and Vijeta respectively. His last and most recent film appearances were in Jinnah that was released in 1998, was a biopic of Mohammed Ali Jinnah Shashi Kapoor has now retired from the Bollywood industry and not appeared in any film since. Recently, at the 55th Annual Filmfare Awards, Shashi Kapoor was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
