Dilip Kumar

Born on 11 December 1922 Dilip Kumar who's real name is Yusuf Khan is an Indian film actor and a former Member of Parliament. Dilip Kumar started his acting career in 1944.

Dilip Kumar has starred in some of the most commercially successful films of the late 40s, 50s, 60s and 80s. Dilip Kumar was the first Bollywood actor to receive a Filmfare Best Actor Award and holds the record for numerous number of Filmfare Awards won for that category.

Acted in a wide variety of roles such as the romantic Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), Devdas (1955), Azaad (1955), Mughal E Azam (1960) and Ganga Jamuna (1961), Dilip Kumar in 1976 took a five-year break from the film industry.

In 1981 the versatile actor returned back with a blockbuster film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in hit films like Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991) Qila in 1998 which was his last flick.

Dilip Kumar earned the title of "tragedy king" with the films like Devdas, Madhumati, Deedar, Amar,etc. He also became the most popular star of Bollywood in the 1950's and had a huge fan following.

In 1961 Dilip Kumar produced and starred in the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his real-life brother Nasir Khan played the title roles. In the 1970s Dilip Kumar acted in fewer films with actors like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan who had begun to take the spotlight. Dilip Kumar played triple roles in Bairaag in 1976. The film flopped badly.

In his last major film, Saudagar (1991), he appeared alongside another legendary actor Raj Kumar. Dilip Kumar in 1993 was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. The actor has received many awards throughout his career, including 8 Filmfare Best Actor awards and 19 nominations. The Government of India honoured him with the Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994 - the highest award for cinematic excellence in India.

In 1980, Dilip Kumar was appointed Sheriff of Mumbai, an honorary position. Dilip Kumar was awarded, Nishan-e-Pakistan, Pakistan's highest civilian award in the year 1997. In 1997 NTR National Award was given to the actor and he was also awarded CNN-IBN Indian of the year - Lifetime achievement award in 2009.

Rajendra Kumar was born in Sialkot, in the West Punjab province of British India, currently in Pakistan on 20 July 1929. Rajendra Kumar was an Indian movie actor, who acted in Bollywood films and was one of the most successful actors in the 1960s and 1970s. Kumar also produced several films in the 1980s starring his son Kumar Gaurav.

made his debut in the 1950 film Jogan in which he starred opposite Dilip Kumar and Nargis. He then shot to fame in the blockbuster hit Mother India in 1957 in which he played Nargis's son. His first major success as a romantic leading man was in Vijay Bhatt's musical superhit Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959).

The 1960s saw Rajendra Kumar rise like no other star had risen, except the first Superstar Rajesh Khanna, and there was a time when every film starring him was a silver jubilee hit.

ere Mehboob (1963), Sangam (1964), Arzoo (1965), Suraj (1966) and Ganwaar (1970). He received Filmfare Nominations as Best Actor for Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Arzoo (1965), and as Best Supporting Actor for Sangam (1964). He was considered a golden boy for the movie producers.

In the mid-1970s several of his films bombed at the box office. The sunshine came when he was offered an interesting role in the film Saajan Bina Suhaagan opposite Nutan. The film was a huge blockbuster of 1978.

In 1981 Rajendra introduced his son Kumar Gaurav in the film Love Story which he produced, directed and also starred in. The film was declared the blockbuster of 1981.

produced several other films starring his son which did not do well. In 1986 he produced Naam with his son and his son's brother-in-law Sanjay Dutt in leading roles which was a box office success but the success was short-lived.

His last attempt to revive his son's career was with the 1993 film Phool where he once again acted alongside his son but this film was also a box office failure. Rajendra Kumar died on July 12, 1999 of cancer only 8 days before his 70th birthday.

Bharat Bhushan-The Legend


Bharat Bhushan (1920 – 1992), born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India was a prominent actor of the 1950s and 1960s in Bollywood. Bharat often took on roles of musicians in the movies.

Bharat Bhushan was a second rung hero, with Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand being at the top rung. He lost his first wife, and married actress Ratna, who was his co star in the movie Barsaat Ki Raat. Bharat Bhushan also got the Best Actor Award in 1955 for the flick Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu(1954).

While his name conjures up instant memories of 'Baiju Bawra' it is for his innumerable romantic roles that Bharat Bhushan will always be fondly remembered by film fans and historians alike.
