Govardhan Asrani, born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, popularly known simply as Asrani. He is a hindi film actor whose Bollywood career has spanned over 35 years.
He came to Poona and studied the Acting course there.Later on he became Director of the same Film Institute.He started career in films like Umang in which Paintal and Subhash Ghai also starred. He has acted in more than 300 Hindi and Gujarati films, mostly in supporting roles of a comedic nature, but some memorable and with an important role in Gujarati films and the storyline, such as the jailer in Sholay, Prashant in Chupke Chupke, Chandru in Abhimaan, Babu in Bawarchi and Nagesh in Chhoti Si Baat.
He is married to Manju Bansal who professes acting.
Asrani recently branched into politics as well (2004). He joined the Congress party in 2004 as a spokesman to help campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.
Asrani has also directed some movies viz. Udaan 1997,Dil Hi To Hai 1992, Hum Nahin Sudhrenge 1980, Salaam Memsaab 1979, Chala Murari Hero Banne 1977 and Amdavad No Rikshawalo 1974.
In 1977, Asrani sang two songs in the movie Alaap, both were picturized onto him. A year later he sang a duet with the singing legend Kishore Kumar for the film Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan.
Asrani recently made a special appearance in the Punjabi film Yaariyan.He received Best Actor, Best Director Award from Gujarat State Government for "Saat Qaidi" (Gujarati). Though nominated in various categories like he was nominated for Filmfare Award "Best Supporting Actor" for film Abhimaan, he won Filmfare Award for best comedian - Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar 1973, Sandip Patel 1990 and BaalikBadhu 1976. He also won Shama Sushama Award for Best Comedian - Anhonee.
